| From the President...
Hi everyone. Sorry I had to put in two articles this month, but with all the BIG projects coming up, I really felt like they needed their own section.
The Jaycee year is nearly half over and I want to thank everyone who has helped in any way so far. I took on this position knowing that it would not be real easy. I was presidential assistant when Leland was president, so I had a good feel for what was to come. But then we were unable to fill all the board positions, and that made me a little nervous. In fact, that made me real nervous. The Falls City Jaycees are known not only in the community, but state wide for all the good we have done.
We needed a few years away from the state paperwork and competitions, but we are just as good as we have ever been. My main goal at the beginning of this year was to not let this chapter go down because no one wanted the responsibility of leadership. But that's what the Jaycees are all about. The Jaycees boast themselves as being the "Premier leadership training organization for young people."
Yes, the Jaycees have been known as a partying group. But we also work very hard at improving things for our community, our state, and ourselves.
This year, I have been surprised by the fact that some relatively new members are chairing projects for the chapter, both establishing programs and new ones. That is the spirit the chapter needs. I thank these people very much for getting involved.
Our membership numbers are on a downhill slide. We have lost several very active Jaycees in the last three years, and will be losing more in the next three to four years. We need to at least replace ourselves in the membership, and we can't wait until we're aging out to do it. If we don't recruit and activate new members, who will be here to carry on the tradition of the Falls City Jaycees. I haven't pushed really hard at recruiting this year, probably because I am not a strong recruiter myself, but there are members of the community between the ages of 21-39 that are looking for something to do. Granted these people need a little "kick in the pants" to get them to sign and become activated, but we have to try.
Okay, no more "soap box" talk. This chapter is a great group and we need to keep it going. Bring a friend to the next meeting. If they are a member already, you got them activated. If they are not a member, sign them up. No one knows what their future holds, but just sitting back and doing nothing will always lead to a boring end.
In Jaycees,
Marcia Harmon
