| From the President...
Hello Fellow Jaycees!
Here I go again. I just want to take a few minutes to introduce myself to you. My name is Ann Severin and I will be your President for the year 2003. Most of you may remember me from the other two times I held this position. For those of you who don't, I'm sure you will by the end of the year. I am married to Dr. Steve Severin, a vet at the Animal Health Center, and we have an 8-year old daughter, Kayla.
Not only will I be serving as your President for 2003, but I am also the sponsor of the Jaycee Teens. I am hoping to have one of them write a monthly article.
Some of you may be wondering why someone would take this position again, let alone for the third time. I want to explain to you why. This will be the only time that I do some preaching, but I really feel that it is important.
As you may, or may not know, the Falls City Area Jaycees elect a board of officers in November of the preceding year. This past year, NO ONE stepped forward to accept the office of President or any of the Vice-President positions at that point. A couple of people stepped forward to accept the Treasurer and Secretary position, but we couldn't have a chapter with only two officers. Finally, at the December meeting, someone had stepped forward for the Membership & Growth VP position. No one wanted to be President, so I said I would take it again.
Steve and I have belonged to this organization for the past 13 years and have loved every minute of it. I do not want to see this chapter fold. There are many people who benefit from this organization - the youth who participate in our youth projects, community groups who we donate money to, those who receive Meals on Wheels when we deliver these, and everyone who thinks the Jaycees are a wonderful organization in our community.
This year, 2003, was almost that year - the year that the Jaycees no longer existed. I would like to challenge all of you to think about this. Who would run the Jaycee Youth Basketball League, Demo Derby, Tractor Pulls, all of the Youth Competitions (Super Shooters, Shooter's Education, Pitch-Hit & Run, Punt-Pass & Kick just to name a few), DSA Banquet, Fireworks Sales & Social, Christmas Tree Sales, and make wonderful donations to other community groups? NO ONE.
Think about what would happen if the Falls City Area Jaycees weren't a part of the Falls City Community. I don't want to think about that. This organization has been a part of our community since 1940 - do we really want to see it go away? Think about that!
We have a lot of great members in this organization. Many of you can be seen at some of the projects, others at almost every project. But, many of you won't step forward as an officer, so this chapter can continue on. On this year's board of directors, all but one has held an office before, some more than once, and some have been President. Please think about stepping forward to be an officer. Right now I am looking for a few directors. These are the ones who contact members to keep them informed of what is going on - via phone call or postcard. If you would be interested in this, please give me a call. I may even be calling a few of you.
Ok, enough of the preaching. I hope you all had a Very Merry Christmas and will have a Happy New Year and a prosperous 2003. I know that we will have a lot of fun activities scheduled for this year. I encourage all of you to attend some of these.
Until Next Month,
Ann Severin
